Discover Nuarro Lodge, Mozambique

By Jade Hindley

Nuarro Lodge is a wistful hideaway in a stunning setting of unrivalled natural beauty just waiting to be discovered.

Located on the pristine Nanatha Bay in Mozambique, this remote lodge getaway sits among flowing sand dunes, wild bush and glistening Baobab forest, which all add to the feeling of privacy and tranquillity that makes this destination so desirable. The pristine white sand beach stretches 2 kilometres along the bay, perfect for idyllic sunset strolls or a morning jog to wake up for a day of exploration. The staff can also arrange for private romantic picnics, prepared fresh by the resort’s chef, on a secluded beach for you and your partner. Spend your day soaking up the rays, swimming in the sea and spending some quality time together for an unforgettable experience.

There are 10 gorgeous chalets and 2 cottages for you to choose from. Each lodge is situated on the beachfront with a veranda for you to relax on the comfy hammocks and appreciate the breath-taking ocean views, whilst your own pathway leads directly to the sea. The vibrant interiors of the lodges have been created in a traditional Mozambique style with everything you need for a peaceful escape including an outdoor shower for moonlight stargazing.

Here, you can experience a peacefulness both physically and mentally in the knowledge that this private paradise was made from sustainable materials. Built by the local village with ethical tourism in mind, this fantastic getaway uses renewable energy to generate clean water and electricity. As co-owners of the land, the community plays an integral role within the resort, ensuring it is run responsibly with fair-trade values, and employing around 80 local residents.

For food and drink, there is a beautiful beach bar on the eastern side of the lodge, where you can spend your days watching the whales pass by from the wooden deck and enjoy light snacks and drinks in a serene and informal atmosphere. On the western side is a restaurant serving delectable seafood and an exciting ever-changing menu, with an elegant cocktail bar and sunken lounge with huge cosy cushions to hang out and get to know the staff and other guests and share tales of your adventures so far.

Not only can you indulge your taste buds but also your sense of adventure at the onsite activities centre. Nuarro Lodge has its own PADI-affiliated diving centre with passionate and experienced PADI instructors on hand to accompany you whilst exploring the 15 amazing local sites. The mysterious underwater world in the surrounding reefs is home to a vibrant array of spectacular fish and sea creatures. They provide off shore and boat opportunities and provide courses for all levels, from beginner to dive master. The activity centre also offers a wide range of excursions if diving isn’t your thing, including snorkelling, kayaking, beach picnics, whale-watching, mountain-biking and cultural visits including a trip to the lighthouse at Baixo do Phinda for the stunning vistas.

Our recommended Hidden Retreat would include flying into the beautiful Johannesburg for a few days on a thrilling safari adventure and then heading over to Mozambique to finish with a relaxing beach and diving experience to leave you feeling refuelled before you return home. April to October is the ideal time to visit this area as it is considered the dry season where you will generally have reliably warm and pleasant weather.
