It is inspired by the seaside town of Portofino in Italy and the similarities are striking, from the cleverly disguised block towers designed to look like individual villas, to the cobblestone pavements and rustic fishing boats moored in the harbour. The array of amenities is impressive and the dining is superb.

This is one of three deluxe hotels at Universal Orlando and exudes a peaceful ‘miles-away’ feel, especially when accessed via water taxi. It is just a 20-minute drive from Orlando International Airport, and is only 15 minutes from Walt Disney World, while the shopping, dining and minor attractions of International Drive, plus a Lynx city bus stop, are within a 20-minute walk.

It is themed as a romanticised version of picturesque Portofino. The architecture and atmosphere of this five-storey complex feels more like an Italian village that has grown organically around a central bay than a 750-room hotel. Immaculately clean grounds — landscaped with graceful cypress trees — carry through on the theme.
