Set in the purpose-built retreat of 500-acre super-resort Grande Lakes, which also includes a 1,000-room JW Marriott and a superb 18-hole Greg Norman-designed golf course, the Ritz-Carlton benefits from the full array of amenities within the resort, including a 40,000sqft spa. It is far enough away from the theme parks to feel well off the beaten tourist track but is still just 20 minutes’ drive to Disney and Co. One side is devoted to protected wetlands that are part of the Everglades headwaters.

Built in grand (if slightly monolithic) Italian palazzo style, the 582-room hotel is beautifully furnished, with über-elegant public spaces and architectural features like balustraded loggias, inter-connecting patios, courtyards and ornamental gardens. The main pool is an absolute delight and the hotel is linked, via the central spa and convention centre, to the JW Marriott, which also offers tennis courts, boutiques and extensive pool areas, including an elaborate lazy river feature. Fishing from the shore of Shingle Pond, or by boat, is a neat extra, as is the nature walk, kayaking and evening carriage rides (for a fee). Convention business can occasionally take the edge off the tranquil ambience, though.
